• Book 1 – Act 1 – Chapter 3: “OPERATION CHIMERA” (Part 4)

The First time I met Maggie was in a bar in Los Angeles in 1999.  America wasn’t at war at the time and I was stationed at Fort Irwin in California.  I was being trained to be a shooting instructor and was well on my way.  I had a weekend off for R&R and went into the city with a few friends including Gary, Ed, and Mitchell Keene, my best friend.

He and I met after I got out of training and ended up getting an apartment together.  I hadn’t had a friend like Mitchell since Isaak.  Mitch and I just understood each other.

We went into town and started bar-hopping.  We walked around downtown L.A. until midnight and ended up in a dive called “Easy’s”.

After an hour of getting even more drunk than we already were (I should recommend that, when you drink, you learn to pace yourself) we noticed a group of women enter who were obviously celebrating.

There was one in particular who was wearing a bright pink hat. She was getting pretty drunk and was staring over at our table.  She motioned towards our table and her friends all started to look at us and smile and laugh.  For obvious reasons, we all were wearing our combat uniforms.  Women like that.

“It’s on, boys!”  Mitchell said loudly over the thumping music.  He took a shot as I continued to make eyes with the one with the pink hat.  Then she leaned over to her friend and pointed at me not-so-subtly.  Her friend got up and walked over to our table.  “Here we go …” Mitch said, leaning back in his chair and putting his hands behind his back.
